Tips to Improve Your Poker Tournament Skills
Online Poker - Poker Strategy

WSOP Poker ChipTournament poker is a tricky thing to master and frankly I don't think anyone can or will truly master the game of No Limit Hold'em.  This is why the majority of us constantly look online for poker tips, read those poker books from the poker pros or whatever the source may be; were all just trying to improve our poker skills.  Well in this article I am going to give some tips that I feel will help you improve your game and hopefully have these tips help you make your way to a final table.  Internet Pokers 119 is now in session everyone.

  1. Conserve your chips early in the tournament so that you will chips to make moves when the blinds and antes really matter.  Play quality starting hands early. (AJ or better, pairs...)
  2. Pay attention to your table and its players so you can find weaknesses in your opponents' game and hopefully you will be able to exploit those leaks later in the tournament.
  3. Pay attention to your position on the table before playing a hand.  For example, raising KJ suited from the button makes more sense than raising it from under the gun.  POSITION, POSITION, POSITION.
  4. Be cautious of getting all of your chips in with just top pair if the situation doesn't feel right.  When you put your tournament life on the line be 100% sure that you are going in with the best hand or if need be the best situation possible.
  5. Be the aggressor at the table when the blinds and antes start to mean something to your stack.  Choose your spots wisely and mix your game up.  If people are respecting your raises then keep the foot on the gas but if people start to play back at you forcing to you fold; then its best to lay low and wait for quality hands to play.  So if table is being tight be the aggressor but if the table it active it's probably best to wait for quality starting hands.
  6. Be aggressive around toward the players holding the blinds.  Picking up small pots is crucial in online tournament poker so look for your chance to steal a blind here and there.
  7. Avoid playing small pairs when the time isn't right.  For instance say you have 6000 chips and the blinds are 150/300 and you have 33.  A player makes it 900 and you decide to call leaving yourself with 5100 chips.  It's an awful call for a couple reasons.
    • You don't have enough chips to be in this situation.  I am not really sure on the exact amount you would need in order to call 900 in this spot but it's a lot more than 6000 chips.
    • Another reason is because when you are playing a pair, the odds of you hitting a set are 1 out of every 8.5 hands.  With that being said I don't think the value is there for anyone to just call and pray for hitting a set.
    • One more reason is because this could be all-in move.  If the player that raises has been active and its late position then moving all in with 20 big blinds might be a good move in hopes of taking it down pre-flop.  If you get called just hope you're racing. : )
8. My final tip is pretty easy.  If all else fails, just run good.  Get your hands in bad and just let the Poker Gods lead you to victory.  (Not really recommended but it's tough to beat a player that runs good.)
